A parenthesis in a text is a hand reaching back. 'The name of that city was called Luz at the first' is written by someone for whom it is Bethel; 'before there reigned any king over the children of Israel' by someone who has seen kings. Count the reaches, sort them by how far forward the hand must stand, and the text's editing shows as strata.
x: Butler's seventeen marks in order (book order, not years). y: the six edit points, later is lower. A dot is one verse. The grey drop under each mark reaches the latest hand that touched it.
The hands never name one another. They refer to each other in four habits, and every one of them is a later hand treating an earlier layer as something received.

| 2 Chronicles 5:9 | H3 | copy | 1 Kings 8:8 (H1) | 'there it is unto this day' about the ark's staves, kept by a hand writing when there was no ark; the copied 'now' is the fossil [RKN:2qxbwubtKi0@56:23] |

A different sorting of the same five books. The strands sort authorship, who wrote a sentence; the hands sort interventions, who reached back into it and from when. Shown together so a parenthesis can be read against the strand it sits in.
| Documentary strand | On this page |
|---|---|
| J and E, the oldest narratives | the Torah layer: what the hands received and cite; not a hand |
| D, Deuteronomy and the Joshua-to-Kings school | closest to Hand 1: same books, the same 'unto this day', the same citing of source scrolls; the school's sign-off is Josiah's, which is Hand 1's |
| P, the Priestly writer | an author who edits by framing, genealogies and dates, not by asides: dense in the barcode, thin in the markers; sits in the era of Hands 2 and 3 |
| R, the Redactor | the nearest counterpart to a hand; the density panel below compares R per book with the markers per book |
The same markers as a rate, so a long book and a short one compare. The outlined bar is a different method on the same text.
Documented literature, Ross K Nichols's reading from the corpus, and this project's own question about Butler's shape.
Childs (1963) read 'unto this day' as an editor's own confirmation of a received tradition, placed where a monument, a name or a custom could still be checked. Geoghegan (2006) counted its distribution across Joshua to Kings and argued for one Josianic hand. This page's count agrees on the shape: Joshua 15, Judges 7, Samuel 13, Kings 15 - the formula lives in the Deuteronomistic books, and in Genesis as land etiology.
documented: the formula clusters, and the cluster is the conquest-to-kings narrative
Every 'prophet' before Samuel is the seer-to-prophet update of 1 Samuel 9:9 applied backwards; Deuteronomy 12 to 26 is Josiah's scroll expanded; the Shapira text is the first-person Moses scroll without the parentheses, the baseline. On this page that reading is three strata: S2 for the vocabulary update, S3 for the law code, and a baseline that sits below S1 and is not on the line at all.
claimed: the strata agree with his order; the baseline rests on the Shapira text's genuineness
Butler's line is story time: one mark per historical book. The edit points are text time. The reach between them is largest at the beginning of the line and closes toward the Return, where the writer and the story are finally contemporaries. The four cycles before the division are all retold from after it; the parentheses are where the retelling shows.
reading: the chart's early marks are the most edited, the late marks the least
What each stratum means, how many markers need it, and the markers that define it.
| Edit point | The hand knows | Markers | Defining verses |
|---|---|---|---|
| S1 in the land | a hand writing from inside Canaan, after the conquest and the renamings | 143 | Genesis 14:14 Dan named before Judges 18 renamed it; Exodus 16:35-36 an obsolete measure explained; manna 'until they came to a land inhabited'; Numbers 12:3 the narrator praises Moses in the third person; Deuteronomy 2:10-12 the Emim and Horite aside; Deuteronomy 2:20-23 the Zamzummim aside; Deuteronomy 3:11 Og's bedstead, a known sight |
| S2 under kings | a hand that has seen kings in Israel | 9 | Deuteronomy 34:5-12 the death of Moses and the prophet who never came |
| S3 two kingdoms | a hand that knows two kingdoms and the house of David's loss of Israel | 63 | Deuteronomy 12-26 the law code Ross dates to Josiah's scroll |
| S4 north gone | a hand after the fall of Samaria and the deportation of the north | 7 | Judges 18:30 the north is already gone; 2 Kings 17:23 the 'unto this day' formula; 2 Kings 17:23 the north is already gone; 2 Kings 17:34 the 'unto this day' formula |
| S5 Judah in Babylon | a hand that knows Chaldean Babylon and the exile of Judah | 6 | Leviticus 26:33-45 exile and return described as past; 2 Kings 25:27-30 the ending written after Jehoiachin's release (561 BCE) |
| S6 Persian province | a hand in the Persian province, with Persian coin and Aramaic | 40 | 1 Chronicles 3:19-24 Zerubbabel's line carried six generations on |
Each claim the page makes, with its status and what the count or the record says.
| Claim | Verdict | What the record says |
|---|---|---|
| The parentheses fall at a few points, not everywhere | measured | 268 markers over 23,145 verses; 254 of them in the seventeen historical books; six strata by what they presuppose, with S1 and S3 holding 206 between them. |
| Kings and Joshua are the most edited books | measured | 2 Kings 71 and Joshua 47 markers per thousand verses; Judges 29, 1 Kings 28, Deuteronomy 24, Genesis 22. Leviticus 1. |
| Every mark before the Kingdom is reached by a hand from at least two strata later | measured | Patriarchs and Babel reached from S5 (Chaldees), Sinai from S5 (Leviticus 26), Wilderness and Jericho from S3, Judges from S4, Bondage and Exodus and Jordan from S1 only. |
| 'Unto this day' is an editor's comment, and its spread marks one editorial campaign | documented | Childs on the formula as the editor's own witness; Geoghegan on its distribution as one Josianic hand. This count reproduces the distribution, not the attribution. |
| 1 Samuel 9:9 is a later editor updating vocabulary, and the update was applied backwards | claimed | The verse says so itself ('beforetime'). The backward application is Nichols's inference from 'seer' first appearing in Samuel; on this page it is stratum S2 at every 'prophet' in Genesis to Judges. |
| Deuteronomy 12 to 26 is Josiah's scroll, expanded | claimed | Nichols's reading of 2 Kings 22-23 against Deuteronomy; the mainstream date for Deuteronomy's core is the seventh century, the extent of expansion is his. Drawn as a single S3 block over the Wilderness mark. |
| The Documentary Hypothesis Redactor layer falls where the markers fall | open | The overlay panel shows R verses per chapter in the five books. Where R and the markers coincide (Genesis 14, Exodus 16, Deuteronomy 1-4) the two methods agree; where R is dense and markers absent (the Priestly frame) the hand is editorial but leaves no parenthesis. |
| The strata are separate hands, not one hand at six moods | measured | 130 of 143 marked chapters carry one stratum only; S5 shares no chapter with S1-S4; S6 shares one each with S1 and S5. Separation is strongest for the two latest points, weakest between S1 and S3 (six shared chapters). |
| The hands refer to each other, but never by name: by copying, citing, colophon and accusation | documented | Four Chronicles verses keep Kings' 'unto this day' with the thing gone (2 Chronicles 5:9, 8:8, 10:19, 21:10); Kings and Nehemiah quote Deuteronomy by name; Proverbs 25:1 names Hezekiah's copyists; Jeremiah 8:8 calls the scribes' pen a lie. Each is a later hand pointing at an earlier layer as something received. |
| The Shapira text is the pre-edit baseline | claimed | A first-person Deuteronomy without the asides would sit below S1. It is Nichols's claim and rests on the strips' genuineness, which this project treats as his question, not a settled record. |
All hits, in canon order. Class, stratum, Butler mark, and the verse. Hand-listed asides carry the Ross K Nichols segment that discusses them.
