Ten symbols under the line — the story shape annotated, tested, and where it holds

Butler's board drew the Old Testament as one stroke. The three pages that read that board closely kept meeting the same figure: something granted, something closing around it, release through rather than around, and one irreversible division. This page is what happened when that figure was made testable: a ten-symbol, content-free operator alphabet, frozen before use; every book from Genesis to Kings annotated blind by citation; and every claim run against shuffled nulls, a decoy text, and a forced-annotation meter. The method polices itself so the material never has to.

What is being claimed, and what is not. This layer makes claims about narrative structure only - never about scripture's truth, and never about any text's derivation from another. An annotation is a deliberate reading, tested against its own nulls. The alphabet is content-free precisely so it cannot smuggle theology in either direction, and a legal text annotated with the same eye produced nothing at all, which is what specificity looks like.

1 · The board, re-drawn from the annotation

Butler's own language - glyphs on a stroke. The barred box is bondage, the waves are a passage through water, a planted flag is a grant, a loop is a turn of the cycle, the crimson fork is a split, the fraction is a score, and the double bar is an ending held open. Everything drawn here was found by the blind annotation; the curated line compresses it the way her board compressed the books.

The board, re-drawn from the annotation - one line, Genesis to the two endingsButler compressed the story into glyphs on a stroke; this is the same stroke carrying what the blind annotation found. Curated - the complete record is the map below.WORDbadal ×5 - creative, namedCainthe flood: in, throughBabelPROMISELot: territoryIshmael: inheritanceEsau: birthright1212Ephraim: birthrightinto Egypta coffin, waitingGENESISEgypt - no lapse firstthe seaLAWcalf · tables twicethe 40 yearsthe Jordan - the last waterLANDJericho given, not takenafter this, release is politics, never passageEXODUS-JOSHUA40804040the judges: lapse-led turns, order freeTHRONEasked for in a lapsetemple · the peakthe garment torn in twelve1 Kgs 12 - seam: SUCCESSION102Assyria?D B X - erasedBabylonD B O - held open:a king alive at tableJUDGES-KINGSEnuma ElishTHRONEthrough her mouthcreative: named12moGilgamesh XICOUNSELthe delugeGODHOODthe same shapes, centuries older
How to read the fork. The line runs whole from creation to Solomon. Genesis is where it forks and re-forks without breaking - every fork carries its seam. From Exodus to 2 Samuel the line refuses to fork at all, through a civil war and two secession scares. It finally divides at the first contested succession, and the two branches take the two endings Butler drew: the cut thread at a question mark, and the double bar that is a rest.

2 · The complete record

The same layer uncompressed: one row per text, every operator in narrative order. The distribution is the finding - where symbols cluster, and where they refuse to appear, differs by book in ways the alphabet was not told about.

The split waits for the throne, and the annotation found that blind. Nine pericopes carry S in Genesis - the book of divisions - and then the operator vanishes for the entire stretch from Exodus to 2 Samuel. It returns exactly once: 1 Kings 12, the division of the kingdom, carrying the seam succession - the first and only use of that seam in the layer. From-Word-To-Throne argued that only a throne has a seam; the blind annotation put the one S of the monarchy books at the one contested succession. Near-splits that rejoin - the altar at the Jordan, the house-war of 2 Samuel, Sheba's revolt singing the very slogan 1 Kings 12 will use - were each refused the operator by its own is-not column.
Three passes go through water, and then the water stops. The flood, the sea, the Jordan. After that P nearly disappears: Sennacherib's siege lifts by rescue arriving from outside - which the operator's own definition excludes - and the return from exile happens by Persian permit. Release stops being a passage and becomes politics, exactly where the diagram pages said the mechanism switches.

3 · The alphabet

Frozen at Gate B before any annotation. The right-hand column is the discipline: what each operator refuses to mean.

symnamemeansis NOT
GGRANTsomething given, unearned in the tellinga reward, an outcome
DDRIFTthe granted condition lapses; the slow accumulationa single sinful act by one person
BBINDconfinement imposed from outsidea self-inflicted delay

XERASEa branch terminateda death, a defeat that is survived
TRETURNa branch restoreda victory
ORESTan ending held open, not closeda conclusion
Deliberately absent: CIRCLE. Circling is not a symbol - it is the string repeating, detected as a regex over the annotation, never annotated directly. The moment a cycle can be written down as one mark, everything becomes a cycle and the claim stops being falsifiable.

4 · Two books, two shapes - the double dissociation

The strongest result in the layer. Each detector passes its shuffle test in one book and finds literally nothing in the other.

motifJudgesGenesis
lapse-led cycle (D B Y P O, repeating)fires - within-null percentile 1.000zero matches
grant-led turn (G, then held, then passed)zero matchespasses - percentile 0.958
covenant three-beat (given, held, passed through)zero matchespasses - percentile 0.953

The staircase falls out

Reading the grants off the blind annotation in order gives: the world spoken (Gen 1), the promise (Gen 12), the law (Exod 19), the land (Josh 1 and 6), the throne (2 Sam 7). Word, promise, law, land, throne - From-Word-To-Throne's staircase, recovered rather than imposed.

Two endings, two strings

The north ends D B X - indicted, boxed, erased: the question mark. The south ends D B O - indicted, boxed, and held open on Jehoiachin alive at the king's table: the double bar that is a rest, not a full stop. Butler's two terminal glyphs, recovered as operator strings.

The shape is older than the canon

Enuma Elish runs grant, passage, creative split, cosmic bookkeeping - with the split of a watery unity into two named halves (Tablet IV 137-138), the same valence and seam as Genesis 1. Gilgamesh XI runs G B P - the flood string of Genesis 6-8, operator for operator. Same frozen alphabet, same is-not discipline.

5 · What held, what tripped, what is still provisional

The layer's claims with their standing. The vocabulary is the method's own: measured ran against a null; annotated is a blind reading enforced by lint; reading is interpretation; tripped is a pre-registered criterion that failed and was written up.

ClaimStatusRecord
The five covenant forms fall out of the grant-chain unimposedmeasuredPhase 3 acceptance; the G-sequence across books reads word, promise, law, land, throne with no motif steering it.
The split waits for the succession seamannotatedOne S in Exodus through Kings, at 1 Kgs 12, seam=succession - the seam's first occurrence. Near-splits refused by the is-not column at Josh 22, 2 Sam 1-4, 2 Sam 20.
Division has two valences, lexically separatedmeasuredStrong's H914 (badal) occurs in Genesis five times, all in chapter 1, never after - verified against the Hebrew-project morphhb concordance. Creative division owns the verb; destructive division happens only in plot.
The Judges cycle motif as first draftedtrippedMissed its own gate (within-null 0.945 vs 0.95) because the template put GRANT only ahead of the lapse; Gideon's turn runs D B Y G P O. Written up in RESULTS-phase1, not buried.
The revised cycle motif (grant allowed mid-turn)provisionalPost hoc on Judges (within-null 1.000 there), passed every negative control, but its held-out test did not arrive: Kings compresses the cycle into regnal bookkeeping instead of narrating turns. It stays provisional.
The alphabet does not fit everythingmeasuredLeviticus 1-7 annotated with the same eye produced zero operators and zero motif firings across every test. Forced-annotation rate over the whole layer: 1.2%.
The reset narrative in the corpus shares this story formmy readingThe spine recovered here - order granted, catastrophe, scattering, bondage, deliverance, erasure of one branch, remnant, held-open silence - is also the narrative spine of the mud-flood reset material, as OT-Storyline-Symbolic already observed. Shared form, not shared truth claims and not derivation; this is the one edge this layer proposes to the concept graph.
Gaps the alphabet refused to paper over. Two event families recur that no operator honestly fits: n-way dispersion (Babel) and internal strife that neither splits nor erases (Abimelech, the Shibboleth massacre, Dinah). They account for the layer's only forced labels and are logged for an explicit alphabet-revision decision - which would cost a full re-annotation and so waits for the human who owns the ontology.
